Slab Casting Progress: Thick, Thin, and Strip

With both incremental changes and "leapfrog" technology, steelmakers are pushing the evolution of continuous casting for sheet and strip production.Slab casting is the core technology of flat-rolled steelmaking - where the highest-value products are formed, where output is most critical, and where significant volumes of capital are spent on improving casting systems, modifying equipment for better performance, and innovating new approaches to casting.Developments in conventional (thick) slab casting are continuing. A notable example is last summer's restart of the two-strand machine at Thyssen Krupp Stahl's Beeckerwerth Works in Germany.
