Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., and MHI Steel Machinery Engineering & Service co. Ltd. have supplied more than 600 strand of billet and bloom continuous caster to domestic and overseas customers since 1966. In this time, they have been developed devices to improve the cast quality, such as in-line reduction mill, spray-cooled mould and electromagnetic stirrers. They have established solidification technology to improve casting quality and increase continuous caster casting speed and efficiency. In this paper, we report a new electromagnetic brake and stirrer using a commercial bloom continuous caster of Oji Steel co. Ltd. in Japan, that decreases non-metallic inclusion, improves the equiaxed crystal zone ratio, decreases the maintenance cost.
