A closed-loop blast furnace automation system, dubbed Vairon, achieves constant hot metal quality and lower production costs.Austrian steel producer Voest-Alpine Stahl Linz produces a total of 3.7 million tons of high-quality steel per year for the automotive and household appliance industries. Approximately 3.2 million tons of hot metal are supplied to the steel works each year from two small-sized blast furnaces (BF-5 and BF-6, with BF-4 in standby condition) at 1,850 tpd hot metal each and a medium-sized blast furnace, BF-A, which has a nominal capacity 5,500 tpd, but currently produces more than 5,800 tpd or 65 percent of the total hot metal output in Linz (Table I).
