IRONMAKING innovations may come and alternative technologies may go, but the much-maligned by-product coke oven is still alive and kicking. Like its ironmaking ally the blast furnace, the coke oven has withstood the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune for, lo, these many years. Now hedged 'round with expensive and extensive pollution controls aimed at capturing any and all deleterious emissions, it is a survivor-even though its numbers are dwindling as older batteries are shuttered. As a result, integrated steelmakers will continue to produce or buy coke to support blast-furnace ironmaking at least through the first decade, of the 21st century, as a recent International Iron and Steel Institute study predicts.
