LAST year, the Conshohocken rolling facility of Lukens Steel may have enjoyed its finest hour, producing 325,000 tons of steel plate-the most it has ever produced in one year. The amazing part is that the record-setting pace occurred while the mill itself was being ripped apart, reconfigured, and reconstructed for installation of a new four-high reversing Steckel mill-the keystone in what the company describes as its "transformation to a world-class specialty steel producer." When this transformation is complete (projected for 1996), Lukens will sell a broad line of carbon, alloy, and stainless products in high-value market niches. Service and technical support will receive top priority. Plus, a rapidly growing stainless steel service center business will provide direct channels to Lukens' end-user customers.
