In the application of inverse halftoning by the minimum, two problems exist. One is that the estimated image is a point with few changes the tone, and the noise grows if the calculating area is small. Another one is to blur the edge in the estimated image when the calculating area is large. This paper describes the method of the variable calculating area according to the change in the tone in inverse halftoning by the minimum mean square method. The proposed method is able to solve the two problems mentioned above.
