Infrared detectors capable of sensing human movement can enhance convenience and save energy in lighting control systems, household appliances and office automation equipment. MEW has developed a compact infrared movement sensor with integratedamplifier that can meet the size and cost constraints of these applications. The detector's 9mm diameter TO-5 can-type package contains a passive infrared sensor, an ASIC with current-to-voltage converter, amplifier and comparator, and chip componentsmounted on a molded-interconnection-type printed circuit hoard. A small infrared sensor occupying an area of just 0.5mm square allows the lens to be less than one fifth the area previously required, leading to a total detector volume that is just onetenth that of previous detectors. In addition, a variety of lenses have been developed to tailor the detection area to the application.
