Packing characteristics of small fixed chamber type roll baler

To make clear the packing characteristics of small fixed chamber type roll baler, we investigated the effects of moisture content, cutting length and pickup operating speed of straw and grass on the roll bale dry matter density and required power. Two kinds of small fixed chamber type roll balers mounted on tractors were used, chain conveyor type and roller type forming methods. The roller type offered higher packing density than the chain conveyor type, but required more power, and the bale drymatter density per maximum required power was lower. When grass and uncut straw were packed with the chain conveyor type, the most suitable pickup operating speed which reduced the maximum required power was available. When wheat and rice straw 5 cm orlonger were packed, differences in cutting length hardly affected the roll bale dry matter density per maximum required power in both forming methods.
