Crop Variety Management by Farmers in Burkina Faso (3)- Diversity of Criteria for Ranking Varieties Expressed by Farmers-

In Burkina Faso, Ministry of Agriculture has a clear policy of expanding the use of certified seeds of Improved Varieties (IVs) by small scale farmers through market mechanism especially after recent enactment of Seed Law. However, this policy implementation does not necessarily integrate farmers' criteria of selecting varieties suitable for their own fields. In this research, the authors try to find farmers' perception of criteria for distinguishing and making preferences among varieties including both Improved and Local Varieties(LVs) for their own management of crop varieties. In this part three of presentation, results from two adjacent villages (Medega and Yarspiinga) in the southern region will be introduced. The authors also try to discuss how to overcome biases of outsiders (Chambers1983) in the context of variety management.
