Wild Sago Palm Forest in South Sorong, West Papua Province, Indonesia

The growth and starch productivity of sago palms in semi-cultivated and cultivated gardens were considerably reported. However, those in wild sago palm forest are very few. Here we report the growth status of sago palms in the wild forest in South Sorong, West Papua, Indonesia.くResearch methods> The research was carried out in a wild sago palm forest in September 2012. Three surveyed areas (quadrate) with an average palm density covering 40m x 40m square were selected in the wild sago palm forest and each quadrate was dividedinto 4 quarters (20m x 20m). The number of trunks with over 0.5m in height and suckers in the divided squares were recorded. For the trunks, their trunk lengths were estimated by a measuring pole. From the each quadrate plot, palms at harvesting stage (bolting to flower stalk emergence stage) and at mid-stage of trunk elongation were selected for 2 and1 palm, respectively, and these palms were cut down by a chainsaw for the measurements of growth parameters of the leaf and trunk. For the palms at mid-stage of trunk elongation and for the selected palms at harvesting stage from each quadrate plot, the fresh weight of each organ or part was measured.
