The global manufacturing industry is stepping up its rate of investment in engineering collaboration tools, according to market research firm Daratech Inc. Worldwide user spending for such tools will top 185 million dollars in 2000, a growth of 63 percent compared with the previous year. Daratech defines engineering collaboration tools as those that provide some form of real-time interactive viewing, interrogation, markup, and sharing of engineering models, drawings, and related information. The collaboration that they enable most often involves leveraging the Internet or an intranet to extend access and enable interaction with engineering data-with out requiring access to the CAD system with which the data was authored.
