SOUTH AMERICA SPOTLIGHT: PERU - Camisea Natural Gas Fields Contain About 20% More Reserves Than Originally Estimated

Peru has the fifth largest proven natural gas reserves in South America. According to the June 2009 BP Statistical Review of World Energy (BPSRWE) Peru's year-end 2008 proven reserves were 11.8 Tcf (334 × 10~6 m~3). Peru hopes to continue to increase natural gas usage in its country and reduce reliance upon oil and hydroelectricity. Year-end 2008 consumption totaled 120 Tcf (3.4 × 10~9 m~3) and marked the seventh consecutive increase - 14 Bcf (0.4 × 10~9 m~3) in 2002; 17 Bcf (0.5 × 10~9 m~3) in 2003; 31 Bcf (0.9 × 10~9 m~3) in 2004; 52 Bcf (1.5 × 10~9 m~3) in 2005; 63 Bcf (1.8 × 10~9 m~3) in 2006; 95 Bcf (2.7 × 10~9 m~3) in 2007 per BPSRWE figures.
