AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LARGE KANGAROOS OF AUSTRALIA

Kangaroos are herbivores belonging to the marsupial subfamily Macropodinae and range in size from about 3 to 80 kg. They are adapted to open forest, woodland and grassland habitats. The smaller species are nocturnal but the larger species are crepuscular. Two of the four species of well-known large kangaroos, the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) and the euro (M. robustus erubescens) live in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country and two, the eastern grey kangaroo (M. gigantea) and the western grey kangaroo (Af. fuliginosus) live in woodland and open forest areas of the east and south.
