LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC UNITS OF TETHYAN TYPE OF EAST STARA PLANINA MTS AND STRANDZHA MT. (VELEKA UNIT), SOUTH-EAST BULGARIA. CORRELATION ESSAY

Allochtonous Tethyan-type rocks from the East Stara Planina Mts can he correlated with lithostratigraphic units of similar ages within the allochthonous Veleka unit in Strandzha Mt., SE Bulgaria. The correlation is based on the similarities between the Upper Triassic Glogova Formation (Carnian-Norian: interbedded shales, marls and limestones with intraolistolites) of the Matorides (East Stara Planina Mts) with the Tolpan Formation (alternation of limestones with marls and/or argillites), on one hand, and parts of the East Stara Planina Mts Norian-Toarcian Sinivir Formation (siliciclastic turbidites) with the Kalinachukar Formation (also siliciclastic flysch type alternation) of Veleka unit ( Strandzha Mt.). The similarities may be interpreted as a result of similar environment deposition either within different parts of the Eastern (Euxinian) Tethys, or within a single rift of the Mator basin (western extension of the Tethys) that has been closed and disrupted in Middle Jurassic and end Early Cretaceous times.
