Coke oven gas is produced in connection with the steel industry but is not actually used by the steel industry itself. In other words, it is a valuable byproduct resulting from the process of converting black coal to coke for the production of steel. Besides causing pollution, the venting of coke oven gas would also be a waste of valuable fuel that could be used by other industrial processes.
