Chromosome numbers and sex chromosome systems in buprestids (Coleoptera, Buprestidae)

Karyotypes of 15 species of the buprestid genera Julodis (2 species), Julodella (1), Acmaeoderella (1), Capnodis (2), and Anthaxia (7) from Armenia have been examined. 5 variants of chromosome numbers (14, 16, 18, 20, 26) and 4 sex chromosome systems (XY, neo-XY, Xy_p, and Xy_r) are revealed. All available data on the karyotypes of the World buprestids are summarized in a table. In the 77 species examined., chromosome numbers vary from 12 to 26. Sex chromosome systems are diverse, Xy_p being the commonest. This system is supposed to be ancestral in the evolution of the Coleoptera and was fromed in the common ancestor of the Coleoptera and Megaloptera.
