IRAN DETERMINED TO BOOST ITS GAS RESERVES: Asian Oil Companies are Called in to Replace IOC

In spite of Iran possessing the second largest gas reserves after Russia, up until now gas production has been insignificant. In fact, production is not even sufficient to cover internal consumption, which is supplemented by substantial quantities of gas imported from Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Gas processing, transportation and distribution infrastructures are limited and have to be expanded dramatically. Imported gas from the Caspian area will cover consumption in the north of the country while domestic reserves located along the coast and offshore in the Gulf and the Hormuz Strait will cover the needs of the rest of the country.
