Methylated cyclodextrins constitute versatile scaffolds for the synthesis of chelating di-, tri- and tetradentate podands, which can act both as first and second coordination spheres towards various transition metal fragments. This review focuses on the methods developed in the authors' group for accessing multisubstituted methylated CDs and their subsequent transformation into oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur chelators, the coordination and supramolecular properties of which are then discussed within the context of industrially relevant homogeneous catalysis.
