The Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) oilfields are adding a new and important chapter to the Caspian's history. Lying 62 mi. (100 km) east of Baku under 419 to 574 ft. (128 to 175 m) of water, the linked fields are being developed by a BP-led consortium including Chevron, State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), Inpex, StatoilHydro, ExxonMobil, Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company (TPAO), Devon, ITOCHU and Hess in phases under a 30-year production sharing agreement signed in 1994. By any measure ACG is impressive. The huge structure comprises a series of reservoir horizons located 6561 to 11,482 ft. (2000 to 3500 m) beneath the Caspian Sea. Oil from Chirag began flowing in 1997 with first oil from the Central and West parts of the Azeri reservoir produced in 2005 and from East Azeri in 2006. At its peak the field will be producing 1 million barrels of oil a day - roughly 20% of the world's new supply.
