Use of microorganisms for treatment of sewage and utilization of wastes of sulfate production facilities

The fungi Trametes villosus and Phanerochaete sanguinea were shown to bleach wastes of a pulp-and-paper plant and decrease the chemical oxygen minimum value. The possibility of the use of fungi associated with other microorganisms for composting solid lignin-containing wastes of a pulp-and-paper manufacture was demonstrated. There is firm evidence that destruction of lignin occurs through oxidation with breakage of aliphatic C-C and Ar-C bonds. In addition to degradation processes, concurrent condensation reactions were observed.
