The effects of silver and bis-cyanoargentate ions on the electrokinetic and transmembrane potentials of the cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain B-5040 was investigated. The difference between the cyanide complex of silver and silver ions in their effects on the potentials is due to (1) chemical properties of the ions and (2) metabolic transformation of the metal complex by the microbial culture. The transformation involves the decomposition of the cyanide followed by silver sorption. The cyanide complex of silver was less active than silver ions.
