When the Panama Canal Authority drafted its master plan in 2006 for a US$5.25 billion expansion of the Panama Canal, it was focused primarily on accommodating the cargo vessels that have passed through the locks for nearly 100 years. The goal was to enable larger ships to use the 49.7 mi. (80 km) shortcut during the next century.
