The Baikal seal Pusa sibirica (Gmelin, 1788) (also known as "nerpa") is one of the smallest seals; itsadults grow to a length of about 1.3 m. They were mentioned scientifically in print as early as 1763. The adult coatis dark, with a silvery gray back and lighter yellowish gray belly. The Baikal seal is a representative of the order ofpinnipeds and the family of real (earless) seals; also essentially a population of ringed seals Pusa hispida (Schreber,1775) that evolved in reproductive isolation. The Baikal seal spends most of its life in water, surfacing periodicallyto breathe.
