Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan, is a semi-enclosed bay with water depths over 230 m, com-prising two basins (north and south) connected by a shallow channel area. In order to examine the spa-tiotemporal distribution and species composition of demersal fishes and shellfish, experimental samplingsurveys using the simple trawl net (8 m wide, 23.5 m long, 27.9 mm and 20.2 mm mesh size at net bodyand cod end respectively) carrying canvas kites on the tip of the wings were conducted at 8 stations inKagoshima Bay during May 2003 through April 2008. All individuals belonging to Pisces, Crustacea andMollusca were sorted at each haul and identified to species level, then counted in the laboratory. In total,161 species in 78 families of Pisces, 101 species in 34 families of Crustacea and 27 species in 13 familiesof Mollusca were collected during the present study. The most dominant species was Plesionika semilaevis(Pandalidae) accounting for 48 % of total number of individuals collected. Biological aspects of somedominant species including P. semilaevis, Trachysalambria curvirostris (Decapoda, Penaeidae),Coelorinchus jordani (Gadiformes, Macrouridae) and Solenocera melantho (Dacapoda, Solenoceridae)were also described.
