The seaweed art was born at Shimoda Marine Research Center about 30 years ago. Mrs. Noda tried to improve the method producing pressed seaweeds because those made by most algologists were not so beautiful, while most seaweeds alive are colorful and varied in shape. She succeeded in producing beautiful pressed seaweeds. And further, she tried to draw a picture using different seaweeds. As the seaweed art accessible to all can make them understand the importance of marine forests and the global environment, the lecture for children and people to draw the picture using seaweeds has been held. The Pressed Marine Algae Association was organized 5 years ago, and the seaweed art has prevailed. An important subject at the present is the cultivation of instructors in lecture of seaweed art.
