Overview of the NIRS International Open Laboratory:Particle Therapy Model Research Unit

摘要

Charged particle radiotherapy has been conductedat HIMAC of NIRS since 1994. In order to make thebest use of clinical experiences with fast neutronsaccumulated preceded to the HIMAC project,carbon was chosen (C-ion RT) because of similarbiological effectiveness to that of fast neutrons foundin biological experiments in-vivo and in-vitro. Forthe past 14 years thereafter, accumulated clinicalevidences with C-ion indicate outstanding efficacy ofthe C-ion against various types of tumour and thesimultaneous preservation of QOL. It was approved asthe "Advanced Medical Technology" by the Ministryof Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan in 2003. Todate, more than 4,000 patients have been treatedunder the same framework as that at the initiation in1994 [1].
