Various polymeric amphiphiles spontaneously form micelles or self-aggregates by undergoing intra- and/or inter-molecular association between hydrophobic moieties in aqueous media,primarily to minimize interfacial free engergy.These polymeric nanoparticles exhibit unique characteristics,depending on hydrophobic/hydrophilic constituents,such as unusual rheological features,a nanoscale hydrodynamic radius with core-shell structure,and thermo-dynamic stability.For the past decade,therefore,polymeric amphiphiles have been recognized as promising delivery systems of drugs and genes because they can reduce toxic side effects and improve therapeutic effects.
