In this paper, the recent status of the fuel cell research and development in China from 2006-2010 is introduced and reviewed. (1) According to the government policy, the R&D of a PEFC vehicle was dominant. Demonstrations of the fuel cell bus and of the fuel cell car showed a technical progress. However, the lifetime and the cost are still barriers for a FCV to be commercialized. Key materials and components for a PEFC were developed. The allfluosulphonicacid ionic exchange membrane was almost commercialized; and the catalyst coated membrane was commercialized and sold. (2) A Tubular SOFC stack and a planar SOFC stack were developed. However, the performance, the lifetime and the stability are still challenging problems to be solved. (3) The funding for the fuel cell research was supported dominantly by the government. Only a few local private enterprises made investment on the small PEFC power sources.
