Polarization Independent Optical Isolator for Broad Wavelength Range Operation

Polarization independent optical isolator suitable for broad wavelength range around 1.55 #mu#m has been developed. The isolator is composed of four rutile birefringent crystal plates and three GdBiIG Faraday rotators, and has high isolation for broad wavelength range and low polarization mode dispersion. Outer sizes of the isolator are ? 4 X 8 mm and aperture dia. is 1.4 mm. Metal bonding and laser welding technique are applied for constructions. Optical characteristics are as follows an insertion loss of less than 0.3 dB, a polarization dependent loss of less than 0.05 dB, and especially, an isolation of better than 45 dB over the entire wavelength range 1.50-1.58 #mu#m.
