The initial solidified phase, such as coarse α phaseand scattered chill structure, affects the flow length of thealuminum die casting alloy. The effects of initial solidified phaseon the flow length of ADC12, ADC1O and AC2A wereinvestigated using a cold chamber type die casting machine. Theflow length decreased with the area ratio of the initial solidifiedphase. The structure of the initial solidified phase also affects onthe flow length. The deviation of flow length increased with thecontent of Si. The critical solid fraction of fluid flow was alsoestimated using the relationship between the initial solidified phaseand flow length. The critical solid fraction of fluid flow was about 0.6.
