We read with great interest the experimental paper by Wu et al of the effects of the NaVET1" exchanger BIIB513 on cardiopulmonary performance, oxygen transport and tissue inflammation in a traumatic haemor-rhagic shock model. The authors found, besides other effects, the Na~+/H~+ exchanger BIIB513 to significantly attenuate the decrease of the left ventricular stroke work (LVSW) index in the NaVH1" exchanger group. However, instead of the unit, joule (J), they have chosen an incorrect unit of measurement for the LVSW,2'3 namely, gram x meter (g-m). The LVSW refers to the work carried out by the left ventricle to eject the volume of blood during one cardiac cycle, called stroke volume. The stroke work is best depicted by the use of ventricular pressure-volume diagrams, in which the LVSW is the area within the pressure-volume.
