Ships are fully-developed products that must provide high reliability and reasonable prices to attract the buyer. and this is an essential factor in ship construction. Therefore, continuous efforts must be made for reforming production technology. The historical development of production technology in the IHI shipbuilding system is outlined according to each construction process for evaluation in terms of the requirements for high productivity. The productivity assessment is achieved by considering precision of products in the intermediate processes, availability of adequate production information and productivity ol the entire production system. The future targets of production technology are then studied.
