IHI has developed a slagging system for incinerator ash based on a DC Joule-heating furnace. The process can vitrify ash which might be contaminated with harmful substances, and also obtain products for recycling. The ash is vitrified, and becomes low elution and environmentally compatible material because harmful substances are bonded into the slag matrix. The slag has properties similar to stone or sand and can be considered for a large number of possible uses, e.g., for road construction, construction industry aggregates or ceramic material additives. The characteristics of this system and some results of the pilot plant are described.
