Physical parameters of the characteristics of added resistance in regular waves of short wavelength were investigated through tank experiments and numerical simulation. By improving the measuring accuracy of added resistance, experimental investigations were made into the effect of amplitude of incident waves, ship speed and ship draft on added resistance. To identify the cause of resistance increase in short wavelength, the pressure distribution was measured over the hull surface and combined with numerical simulation by the CFD method. The conventional theory of added resistance due to wave diffraction is discussed including applicability of the theory to obtaining the water plane geometry of minimum added resistance due to wave diffraction.
