Development of Thermal Barrier Coating with Superior Thermal Cyclic Properties

The lifetime of the Thermal Barrier Coating (ABC) applied to gas turbines for power generation plants must be increased. IHI has developed a three-layer coating system with an intermediate layer of MoSs_2 between the bonding layer (NiCrAlY) and top layer(ZrO_2). MoSs_2 in sprayed coating may have a self-healing capacity for cracks formed. The cycle life of a three-layer coating ABC was over three times that of the present two-layer coating ABC.
