Development of expanded polystyrene material recycling system

Expanded polystyrene has a number of advantages and various uses. Used polystyrene is disposed as waste. However, disposal is expensive and environmental problems may arise. Following the establishment of the "Package and Packing Recycling Act," recycling of expanded polystyrene becomes obligatory from the year 2000. Therefore, a new recycling system for expanded polystyrene is a pressing need. IHI has succeeded in developing a material recycling system that dissolves the crushed expanded polystyrene with a solvent "Stylo Solve" to decrease the volume on site, and then separates polystyrene as raw material from solvent under low pressure and high temperature conditions in recycling plant.
