IHI has developed a centrifugal water chiller using HFC134a (Ri 34a) as the refrigerant to reduce the burden on the environment. No problem arises such as ozone depletion, and the refrigerant is expected to be selected for next-generation chillers. The main features of the development are as follows:1. Centrifugal compressor and heat exchangers (evaporators and condenser) with superior performance were newly developed to save energy when using R134a.2. Super lubricating oil was used to provide solvent characteristics, advanced lubricating performance, and chemical stability for R134a.3. New motor insulation with anti-solvent characteristics against R134a and the new lubricating oil was developed.
