Background : Lancet, one of the world's leading journals, has been criticized by its readers and other journal editors because its controlling company, Reed-Elsevier, has convened one of the world's largest arms fairs.Objectives :To clarify certain moral principles for medical scientists with regard to their relationships with the military industry.Narrative, non-systematic review of articles of medical journals concerning the issue described above and relevant regulations.Results : Another leading international journal, the Canadian Medical Association Journal, has its publisher's subsidiary friendly to the military industry. 2) Medical journals are vulnerable to have financial affairs with the military industries as well as the pharmaceutical sponsors.3) International conventions have prohibited the production and distribution of nuclear-biological-chemical weapons,but most countries, including Japan, have no laws against the development and production of arms as a whole.4) The Physical Society of Japan adopted a resolution repudiating any relationship with the military, and the Science Council of Japan had issued a statement refusing the conduct of research for war purposes.However, the Japanese medical community has not expressed any determination to withhold cooperation with the military,notwithstanding their war crimes during the World War Two.Conclusion:We propose that Japanese medical scientists should ensure adherence to the following three principles: 1) refuse sponsorship of any event or activity involving the military; 2) reject licensing of research serving the purpose of the military industry ; 3) avoid contributing to medical journals having any financial relationship with the military industry.
