Purpose: The aim of the current work was to investigate the effect of short-term hyperglycaemia on axonal degeneration in a rat model of experimental glaucoma. Methods: The degree of axonal damage was compared between normoglycemic (n = 28) and hyperglycemic (n = 26) adult Sprague-Dawley rats, 2 weeks after induction of experimental GON. Rats in the hyperglycemic group were made diabetic by intraperitoneal injection of streptozocin 4 days before induction of GON. Experimental GON was induced by lasering the trabecular meshwork using a standard protocol. Rats were saline perfused and killed after 2 weeks of elevated intraocular pressure.
