Benchmarking academic performance is an important part of professional development review in academia. However, supervisors may not be aware of the standards at other institutions with which to compare academics' outputs. Most clinical academics will have their performance assessed based on research publication, teaching and supervision, and other community service such as clinical work. Although some institutes set guidelines, there are no collated data on the publication output of academic ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand to allow comparison when performing professional development reviews.
