John Janovy Jr. received his B.S. in math, M.S. in zoology, and Ph.D. in zoology (1965) from the University of Oklahoma, Norman. He joined the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1966 as an Assistant Professor of Zoology and remained there for his entire career. He has been a Professor of Biological Sciences since 1974, and the Paula and D.B. Varner Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences since 1991. Dr. Janovy also directed the university's Cedar Point Biological Station from 1993-1999, where he conducted research and taught numerous field courses for much of his career. Dr. Janovy's broad research interests have included the ecology, evolution, and taxonomy of parasites of numerous freshwater and terrestrial vertebrates and invertebrates, including trypanosomes, gregarines, trematodes, monogenes, and nematodes. Dr. Janovy trained hundreds of undergraduate research students, as well as 18 master and 13 Ph.D. students. He taught introductory biology every year from 1966 until 2011, and has been a coauthor of Foundations of Parasitology for the previous 4 editions. He recently retired from the University of Nebraska but plans to continue writing and publishing.
