Lotus-type porous metals whose long cylindrical pores are aligned in one direction were fabricated by unidirectional solidification in a pressurized gas atmosphere. The lotus-type porous metals with homogeneous size and porosity of the evolved pores can be obtained by mould casting technique for high thermal conductive materials and by continuous zone melting technique for low thermal conductive materials. Mechanical properties of tensile and compressive strength of lotus-type porous metals and alloys are described together with thermal and electrical conductivity. All the physical properties exhibit significant anisotropy. Lotus-type porous iron fabricated by using a pressurized nitrogen gas exhibits superior strength. Possible application such as a heat sink, golf putter, bearing, medical device and machinery parts are presented.
