Pathophysiological study on neck and shoulder pain and/or low back pain was carried out by assessing with the subjective and objective symptoms.The examination on the patients (72 males and 132 females, age : 17~~84 years old) was carried out under consideration of the histological background, e.g., hypertension, osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus.Subsequently, active magnets and dummy magnets were randomly assigned to the patients under a double blind test. Active magnets were applied externally for the painful portion using the samarium-cobalt (Sm-Co) magnets (180m Tesla, 4.5mm in diameter and 2.2mm in height, PIP TOKYO CO., LTD., Tokyo). Dummy magnets (less than 10m Tesla) were also applied as placebo. All the patients wore 8-40 pieces of magnets for 3 days in neck and shoulder pain or for 3 weeks in low back pain, after which the magnets were removed. Significance was determined with the Wilcoxon signed rank test.Significant pain relief was neck and shoulder pain or low back pain observed at 1 day or 1 week after application of the active magnets, respectively. There were no significant therapeutic differences among categorized ages, e.g., younger, middle-aged, older. Placebo effects were noticed in female group.The pain relief by active magnets in the hypertensive patients with drugs, e.g., calcium antagonist and beta -blocker, was significantly weaker than that in the hypertensive patients without drugs.One of the mechanism of healing of ischemic pain to a static magnetic field exposure could be estimated as the elimination of the accumulated algogenic substances by the increase of blood flow in microcirculation.
