A reverse temporalis muscle flap for reconstruction of an anterior cranial base defect

The reverse temporalis muscle flap was first reported by Kim et al. The reverse temporalis muscle flap, which survives by reversed arterial flow through the vascular connection, exists between the superficial temporal artery in the region of the temporalis muscle origin. After the excision of an olfactory groove meningioma in a 35-year-old man, a reverse temporalis muscle flap was used to reconstruct the anterior cranial base. The nasocranial communication was sealed off successfully. To evaluate the viability of the flap, MR-DSA was performed and showed a viable temporalis muscle in the anterior cranial base. The reverse temporalis muscle flap is versatile and useful for reconstruction of the anterior cranial base.
