This paper reports the bit error rate and frame error rate performance of a space-time transmission system for mobile radio communications in which multiple signals are transmitted on the same carrier frequency. In this system, five signals are transmitted using five antennas, and these signals are received by three, four or five antennas of a mobile terminal. The spectrum efficiency of this system is about 10 bit/s/Hz. The receiver employs a maximum likelihood sequence estimation based approach with multi-signal extension. By introducing trellis-coded modulation, the proposed system enhances the transmission performance over Nakagami fading channel where the performance of space-time transmission is severely degraded. This paper reveals by computer simulation that trellis-coded space-time transmission can offer 10 bit/s/Hz spectrum efficiency at 20Mbps transmission rate over 50Hz band.
