Analog receiver circuits for a high-sensitivity CMOS Bluetooth transceiver

Deep sub-micron CMOS is receiving much attention for realizing low-cost, highly integrated Bluetooth transceivers, and in the last two years several papers were published on 0.18um CMOS Bluetooth transceiver chips. During about the same period, sensitivities 10dB better than the standard specification have become common. The authors report the development of analog circuits using 0.18um CMOS for a low-IF Bluetooth receiver. In order to improve sensitivity, large dynamic range circuit techniques and a low noise multi-stage programmable gain amplifier and filter were adopted for the IF block. The fabricated analog receiver's RF block had a 5.4dB NF and the system sensitivity was-88dBm. Specifications for blocking signals were also satisfied.
