Mairac—International Introduction of a New Tasteful Apple

Behind each introduction of a new apple is a history that leads the way of how to introduce this particular apple in a unique way. Apple variety La Flamboyante, with it's trademark name Mairac, tells us of the production marketing activity of a breeder named Charly Rapillard, who worked at Centre des Fougeres of the Federal Swiss Research station (RAG) in the Rhone valley. In 1986, the hybridization took place between Tenroy (Gala) x Maigold, a Swiss variety bred in 1944 with similar characteristicsto Braeburn. According to the breeder, this apple is backed up with good natural genes by their ancestors of Kidds Orange, Golden Delicious and Fraurotacher. Several flavor groups and other quality characteristics make this long keeping apple attractiveto growers and consumers. Mairac has been grown and sold in Switzerland since 2002.
