摘要

There is a great controversy on the basic coding of the brain: rate coding or temporal coding. Many experimental results have been reported supporting either hypothesis and the problem remain unsettled. The dual coding hypothesis is one solution to this controversy which claims that both are used depending on the context. We make an attempt to prove the dual coding hypothesis by showing that the effective time constant of the neuron differs according to the surrounding network dynamics, namely the balance of activity between excitatory and inhibitory neurons.
