Environment-Induced Degradation in High-Temperature Coating Systems

Various manners of degradation behavior fordifferent kinds of heat-resistant coating systems were demonstratedon the basis of failure analysis for specimen subjected to thecorrosive damage both through a practical service as gas turbinehot section component and in a laboratory experimental. Coatingsystems include Al diffusion coating, plasma spraying mainly forthe thermal barrier coating (TBC). Main causes to enhance thecoating failure can be classified into four types in relation with thethermal-mechanical-chemical aspects of coating properties. Inparticular, an importance of considering the simultaneous effectboth of thermomechanical loading such as creep or fatigue, and ofthermochemical loading such as hot corrosion was emphasizedmainly for TBC degradation. Technical subjects for developingmore advanced coating system also were briefly pointed out.
