Characterization of Ca in Rare Earth Alloy Powder Produced by Reduction-Diffusion Method with Metallic Ca

An experimental study was carried out on thecharacterization of Ca in rare earth (R) alloy powders produced bythe reduction-diffusion (R-D) method using metallic Ca asreductant. SmCo5. Sm2Fe17,Nd15Fe77B8,NdFe1.7Co0.3, Tb7Gd13Fe80and MMNi4.2Co0.2 Mn0.3Al0.3 (MM:mischmetal) alloy powderswere prepared by the R-D method. The Ca content of the alloypowders by chemical analysis was from 0.03wt.% to 0.45wt.%. ASEM observation and an EPMA analysis of cross section of thealloy powders revealed that Ca was solute atom in severalintermetallic compounds. The Ca content of intermetalliccompounds increased as the rare earth content of intermetalliccompounds increased. The Ca content of the alloy powders bychemical analysis and the sum of the Ca content of theintermetallic compounds by EPMA analysis were in agreement.
